Thrifted Oil Painting, Quick Easy Furniture Makeover and The Big Picture

Thrifted Oil Painting

Can you believe I thrifted this original oil painting for only $10 dollars?! I have plans to be giddy the rest of the week in case you needed me. I knew it was unique instantly. It was painted on canvas. You could smell the age of it. I looked up the artist and she was an American woman who lived in Paris at the time. She loved painting the streets of Paris and I read that many times she would paint the same street from several different vantage points. That got me thinking. When designing our homes, we should be this same way. You can bring never-ending beauty to your home by simply shifting your vantage point.

The artist’s name is Caroline Burnett. Burnett painted during the late part of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th. She was an American in Paris, painting French street scenes as a member of the Societe des Beaux-Arts. Her paintings reflect the style being pioneered by her contemporaries in Paris with her Impressionistic brush strokes and figural abstraction. This work depicts a wide Parisian avenue. Her work has been sold for thousands to pennies. I plan on keeping this treasure for now.

What I love most about thrifting is mixing old with new for an eclectic style. Adding thrifted items to your home helps keep things cozy and inviting.

Quick Easy Furniture Makeover

When I picked up my painting I came across. This fun piece. I have been looking for a tall dresser the for some time. My kitchen has two drawers and three cabinets. Yes, THREE. Using this piece in the kitchen was going to give me more storage for things like snacks, vitamins, towels and anything else really.

This piece was easy. All I did was lightly sand and clean the dresser. Used THIS spray paint for the wood and sealed it with THIS sealer. I also spray painted the handles with THIS paint.

Easy as at! This piece is heavy and well made. It’s the perfect size to fit anywhere in our bungalow and so maybe you’ll see it in another room someday.

The Big Picture

This week has been tough. Nothing in particular, but my overall routine has been demanding and chaotic. This has been Carter’s busiest semester yet! He is taking 16 credits, works 20 hours a week, had to complete 60 hours of volunteer work for school and the list goes on and on. With both of us being so busy, sometimes tasks can get too overwhelming and I find myself being lost on where to start. I had a thought, “How are we ever going to do this?” This being life. We don’t even have kids yet! How do people have children?

I thought about my own parents who have 5 children and still managed to get it all done. So I called my dad and asked him if he ever feels the way I was feeling and how he handles it? And of course, with his 57 years of experience, he said just the thing I needed to hear. He said, “Yeah, Madison I do get overwhelmed at times. When this happens I tell myself to look at the big picture and establish what actually has to be done. And when the big picture is too much to handle, that’s when you focus on what you can accomplish hour-by-hour.” So remember… if you are feeling like you have a list that you’ll never get through, focus on the things you HAVE to do. And if that list is too much focus on what you can get done hour-by-hour.
