Another DIY project that has come to our rescue! When renovating my friend’s primary bedroom, we had challenge along the way. The bedroom did not have closet doors and the size of the opening was not standard. I have only seen people do curtains or barn doors in this situation, but we had a different goal in mind. We opted for custom-made doors to match the room’s theme, which was inspired by the TV show “Bridgerton.”

How Can I Cover My Closet Without Doors?
In many older homes in Florida, “quirky” is practically the standard. The closet had a non-standard 86-inch opening, whereas standard bifold doors usually cover around 60 inches. I do live in a 696 square foot house, so getting creative is nothing unfamiliar. Luckily Carter, my husband, is usually down for my wild ideas!
The Plan and Installation
We decided to install a set of the standard 60-inch bifold doors at the center of the closet.
These doors will be functional, providing easy access to clothes, shoes, and more. To fill the remaining space, we added a 12-inch panel on both sides. The panels did not come this way, we separated a 24-inch bi-fold door in order to create the two 12-inch panels. They were purely decorative and did not open.
To make sure everything was stable and looked professional, two-by-fours were anchored at the top and bottom of the doorway. We drilled right into the flooring and concrete slab, then tightened them down with concrete sleeve anchors. The doors started to come together, and I knew this was the right decision!
DIY Closet Door Alternatives
Many people wondered if the the closet will still be fully accessible. Yes, 100%! The 12-inch non-functional panels did not limit any access to either side of the closet. We made sure to test this before we began installing the doors.
Trimming Out Closet Doors
After installing the 60-inch bifold doors and the 12-inch panels on each side, there was a remaining gap of 2 inches — 1 inch on each side of the closet opening. To create a seamless look, we used 1-inch trim to cover these gaps. This trim created a clean finish, but also framed the closet doors so beautifully! Nothing but the best for our friends.
Aesthetic Touches
The doors needed to integrate with the rest of the room, so we purchased Home Depot doors with a cane pattern and painted them. The color is Street Wise by Behr, which is the same paint as the trim. This shade matches so many of the rooms and scenes in Bridgerton, it’s so classy!

For the finishing touches, charming knobs and ribbon were added to the doors. A similar ribbon was used to make a DIY macrame cord on the wall lights, I love how the two variations complement each other. Adding little details like this makes a room feel special and unique!
Bedroom Closet Without Doors
The semi-custom closet doors were definitely a win! This project proved that there’s always a solution, even if it’s different from your initial idea. They added so much character while remaining functional. If your closet lacks doors or if you want to enhance your space, try this project!
