How To DIY French Tufted Mattress

This breakfast nook has seen lots of different styles over the last couple of years. We recently redid the breakfast nook with storage last month which meant I needed to add new French tufted mattress cushions! I’ve been here before, so I was so excited to do this project again, even though I knew it would take a lot of man-hours!

Breakfast Banquette with French Mattress

Our old breakfast nook had French mattress cushions that I had made, but it was the first time I had done this project, so not only did the cushions look a little amateur, but they also weren’t the thickness I was hoping for. For the new set of cushions, I ended up using a total of 5-inch foam. Two inches from the previous foam I recycled, and then I topped it with an additional 3-inch foam from Home Depot! This phone from Home Depot is such a great price!

I followed this video tutorial from online fabrics, and this was my third time doing the cushions although it took quite a bit of time the instructions in this video make it so easy!

How to Make Tufted Cushion Without Buttons

I decided not to add buttons on my French tufted mattress, which made the process go by a little faster! The color of the fabric is perfect! I made sure to find a material that was stain resistant by testing the fabric. After it was dry, there were no water sports which meant this fabric was a win!

Custom French Mattress Cushion

One reason why I love doing this project DIY is that I can get exactly what I want by going custom. Sewing your own French tufted mattress cushions really isn’t all too difficult and I think it gives the breakfast nook the extra detail it needs to look so cozy!

Cushion for Bench

I also love having the French tufted mattress on the breakfast nook for additional seating! I made sure to go with 5 inches on the cushion to make the seating extra comfortable. This way, Carter, or I can lounge in this area while hanging out in the kitchen!
