How to Start Building a Chicken Coop

I am so excited to share with you my biggest project yet the chicken coop! OK, maybe not the biggest project, probably my kitchen remodel was the biggest project but this definitely rivaled! It was such a fun project to build a structure. We’re not quite finished with the inside, but keep reading for my chicken confession… this is how I would go about starting to build a chicken coop.

Build your Own Coop

Research! It’s important to do a large amount of research before deciding to build a chicken coop. Your chicken coop size all depends on the number of chickens you plan to have. Our coop is big enough for about five chickens. It’s still important to do a lot of research before doing this project to decide if getting chickens is the best option for your lifestyle!

Find a Blue Print

Next! I recommend finding a chicken coop plan online that works for your space. Depending on where you want to place the coop, will depend on which coop will work best for your backyard! There are lots of different chicken coop blueprints out there. Make sure you use one that has been approved by professional builders.

Buy a Pre-Built Chicken Coop

Another option you could always do is purchase a premade chicken coop online and use paint to make it fit your home and style.

Non-Toxic Paint

Once you have your chicken coop built and ready, it’s important to find non-toxic paint for the inside of the nesting area. I recommend taping off the areas that need to be painted with special paint.

Then after you paint with a special non-toxic paint inside the nesting area, tape off that area and paint the rest of your coop with whatever color you’d like. We used a paint sprayer which saved us a lot of time and the paint job looks so smooth.

Details Chicken Coop

You can do a few extra things to make your chicken coop look really homey and special! Finding a couple of planters and plants to place around your coop is a great way to add details to your coop. I also always love adding lights to my outdoor spaces when I can! We used café lights across the sides and the top of the chicken coop which is a great way to provide light when taking care of the chickens at night.

Chicken Coop Recommendations

Again I recommend doing a lot of research before deciding to add chickens to your home and when searching for the appropriate chicken coop blueprint, I recommend that you find one that has been verified by a professional builder! That way you know your chickens will be safe and the structure will withstand harsh weather!

Chicken Confessions

So the confession I have to make is the chickens you see in this picture… Are not my chickens! I did this project for a design competition and due to deadlines, I knew I was only going to be able to build a structure. We are currently working on plans to finish the inside and get our own chickens ASAP! But isn’t the chicken talent adorable?
