Modern Wallpaper Ceiling + Updated Fan

When people hear wallpaper they think of that floral 80’s wallpaper that was almost impossible to remove. Wallpapers now are not only greener than ever before but they are also a lot easier to install and remove making it the perfect way to add layers to any room design.  Wallpapered ceilings are in and probably here to stay. The ceiling might not be the first place you would think to place wallpaper. I mean, after all, it is called wallpaper. If you set aside the issues and difficulties of adding wallpaper to a ceiling, it is the most perfect way to add any pattern, element, or layer to a room.

Types of Wallpaper

Wallpapers are available in three basic types: pre-pasted, paste-the-wall, and peel-and-stick.

  • Pre-pasted wallpaper has an adhesive backing. That needs a damp sponge or clothes to activate the glue.
  • Paste-the-wall wallpaper is installed by applying glue to the wall and not the paper.
  • Peel-and-stick wallpaper is reusable wallpaper. To install, remove the paper’s backing one foot at a time as you smooth the wallpaper into place. Remember to save the wallpaper’s backing if you plan on reusing the wallpaper.

To remove all three types of wallpaper, just dampen a corner with water and slowly peel off. Most wallpaper often recommends a professional to install and there is a good reason why. This is not to shy you away from trying it yourself, but know that there is a lot to be learned when trying it for the first time yourself.

Wallpaper Difficulties

Now, before I begin I have so disclosed that this is the first time Carter and I had ever wallpapered anything. If you have done any type of wallpapering, you are ahead of the game. However, wallpapering a ceiling is a whole different ball game. Your neck will be sore for a couple of days from looking up. Another problem we found with wallpapering is, walls are never straight or level so keeping your pattern straight can be hard. We recommend trying a wall before a ceiling if you are trying this for the first time. Also just jump in and try it. Don’t give up even if you want to. Being able to wallpaper is a learned skill so your practice will make perfect!

Wallpaper Ceiling

When I saw THIS modern wallpaper from Anthropologie I was won over. I knew I had to add it to our master bedroom. Since we decided to keep our own nightstands (which you can read about HERE) we were able to add this wallpaper into our budget for the makeover and I am glad we did! This wallpaper is Pre-pasted so we did have to wet and “book” the paper before putting it up. We pulled up a YouTube video and just started!

I love the simplicity of the black and wallpaper against THESE curtains.

Modern Ceiling Fan

We replaced our outdated fan with THIS modern black fan. I love the sleek look of this new fan. The black against the wallpaper gives the perfect amount of contrast.

Was It Worth It

Yes. It was worth it. It was really really hard. I am no going to lie. But, I feel more confident I could do it again! You can read more of my post HERE or follow me on Instagram HERE.
