Repurposing Candles for Plants, Disney Date Night and Thinking Less

I have been trying up my plant game for the last couple of years. I never realized that taking care of plants could bring so much joy. Therapeutic, really. Don’t get me wrong, I have killed my fair share of plants during this so-called learning process. But I’ve learned that plants are a lot like us. When they are taken care of and placed in the right spot, they THRIVE. It is so cool. Repurposing candles as pots for new plants is so easy and thrifty.

Plants are in

I totally get why plants are so popular right now. They bring life to a room. Literally. Growing. Alive. In your own house! Isn’t it amazing? Not only are they fun to look at, but they also help clean your air! The air inside of your home is likely not as clean as you would think. Indoor plants remove pollutants from the air by absorbing gases through their leaves and roots leaving behind clean oxygen (in case you zoned out like I did in middle school science class—chlorophyll, photosynthesis, yada yada yada).

Repurposing Candles for Plants

I started with an empty candle jar. To clean the wax out, I put the jar in the oven on the lowest setting and waited for the wax to melt. Once the wax melted, I clean it out with a few paper towels.

Then I added some shells to the bottom of the candle jar. Yes, you should try and opt for pots with good drainage, but if not, just make sure to add rocks or shells at the bottom so that the plants’ roots won’t be sitting in water. I just used shells because that’s what we had on hand (Florida, am I right?).

Plant your plants and you are done! I like to add a few rocks on top of the soil for looks. This is a great way to make use of an old candle jar. You can even spray paint the jar if you are looking for a certain color. Repurposing candles for plants make cute gifts and are super easy.

Fiddle Leaf Fig Plant Drama

If you follow me on Instagram, you will see the drama that I’ve had with my Fiddle Leaf Fig plants. (You can follow me on Instagram HERE). We went away for three weeks this summer and some of the plants just did not make it (I still haven’t ruled out the possibility that they just missed me so much that they wilted). We are trying to save two fiddles and I will keep y’all posted on that. Until then, Carter and I couldn’t keep ourselves from bringing this Fiddle Leaf home. Isn’t it gorgeous! Happy to have a healthy plant back in our home.

Usually, I check my plants for water once a week. I place them all in my kitchen to be watered. Recently got this book as a gift, Wild At Home, and it has already given me so many great tips. Find this book HERE. You can find my gold watering can from Target HERE. I also talk more about this watering can in my Kitchen Fall Makeover HERE.

Disney Date Night

One perk about living in Florida is that Disney is never very far away. I always have felt that if someone says they “aren’t a Disney person,” it’s because they aren’t doing it right. Disney has figured it out. How to have the maximum amount of fun with the least amount of downtime. If I see interest, one day I will do an entire post dedicated to A Day at Disney With the Bess’s. This weekend we went to Magic Kingdom for a few of the classic rides and then headed over to Animal Kingdom to ride Avatar. If you aren’t a “Disney Person” this ride will for sure change your mind.

Think Less Throw More

Carter said something to me that really got me thinking. I posted on my Instagram about using throw blankets. See the details HERE. Every time I try to make a throw have a “thrown” look it just doesn’t seem right. Carter told me I need to “Think less and throw more.” I thought, what a perfect thing to say. He is right. Moving forward with our house projects, I want to stop over-thinking and just try things! That’s the great thing about trying—it doesn’t mean that it’s forever.
