Living in a small house can look and feel just as dreamy as any other space you see on HGTV or Instagram! There are a few tips and tricks I like to use when designing and decorating a space that helps your cozy room feel just a little bigger! This is how I like to make a small living room feel bigger!

Small Living Room Ideas
When it comes to planning and decorating your small living room, there are a few things you should really keep in mind… First, is functionality. How do you plan on using the living room? Will there be a TV or are you strictly going to use it as a room to sit and connect with your loved ones? In our living room, we opted for a Frame TV, so while we’re not using the TV, it appears like art! Carter and I love watching shows together, overanalyzing every character and theme. So making sure we found a way to incorporate a TV into the design was important to us.
Flush Lighting
One way you can really make a room feel larger than it is is to opt for flush lighting. If your lights hang too low from the ceiling, I can really make the room feel like it is coming down on you. We loved this flush ceiling fan! It comes with a remote and has three different settings.
Intentional Pieces for the living room
I urge you to take your time and be intentional with the pieces of furniture you add to your space. When he planned this custom sectional, we opted for a corner piece with no arm on one end. This helped that corner of the room feel more open. The white entry table with the acrylic handles was a perfect fit next to the sofa. I try to find pieces that will fit snug, so I don’t waste an inch in our small living room!
Keep Patterns Simple
I absolutely love patterns, but in a smaller space, you want to keep them as simple as possible! This adorable bird wallpaper was so easy to install, and I love that the background matches the paint color of the rest of our living room, which is Alabaster White by Sherwin-Williams.
Follow a Color Scheme
One way to make a room feel larger than it is… is to follow a simple color scheme! Using a few colors throughout the entire design of the room can really make the space feel cohesive and blend together. I love that our blush rug polls together the darker sofa, and purple wall!
Create a Focal Point
Another great way to make a small room, feel larger is by adding a focal point. I suggest staying away from gallery walls in smaller spaces if you’re trying to make the room feel larger than it is.
I’m not saying gallery walls are a no, I have one in my own home and I love it. It definitely makes the room feel busier. There’s a time and place for that and a small living room in my opinion, is not it!
Whether that’s a large DIY picture ledge with some fun frames and prints, or one large piece of art, creating a larger focal point will help make a small living room feel bigger than it is.
