I’ve had this piece of furniture from IKEA for a few years and I decided I needed to paint it Key Lime Yellow. I’ve been really into this color lately and when I visited New York City last year, I finally convinced myself that I needed something in my home to be painted the same color.

Key Lime Paint Colors
When deciding on the exact color, I picked up several samples from Home Depot and started mixing and matching them to my inspiration. After I got the color I wanted, I took it to get color matched at Home Depot and had them find the most similar color. It ended up being the color Moonraker by Sherwin-Williams, which didn’t surprise me because a few of my followers on Instagram recommended this color!

Havsta IKEA Painted
Painting the Key Lime Havsta IKEA cabinet was actually pretty easy. This piece of furniture is solid wood and IKEA used water base paint so all I had to do was give it a good wipe down and light sand. Usually I always prime but in this case, since it was already painted on solid wood, I didn’t need to. I jump right in with the Key Lime Paint
Best Way to Paint Cabinets Key Lime
I started by cleaning the cabinets with a lint-free cloth and gave the entire piece of furniture a light sand with a sanding block. Then I started with really thin coats using a paint roller. I recommend giving the paint adequate time to dry between layers. This is going to give the paint job a nice professional look.
I also took the time to sand between each layer of paint for a smooth finish.
I let the cabinet dry for two or three days before I sealed it with a clear wax. This is my favorite new protective product. It went on so smoothly and didn’t leave any residue.
I absolutely love the way this key lime painted cabinet turned out! I think it looks eye-catching against the dark floral wallpaper, and it brings such a fun element to our kitchen.
IKEA Hardware Replacement
An easy way to upgrade a piece of furniture from IKEA is to replace the hardware. I opted for these adorable star knobs, and I think the matte black is a good contrast against the Key Lime paint.
I love the new color. Did you see it peekaboo through our Florida room? The Key Lime paint works perfectly with the gallery wall.
Overall, I’m so excited about how this cabinet turned out, and I can’t wait to change a few more things in my kitchen now that I have our new appliances!
