Today, I’m excited to share a modern 70’s inspired living room makeover that has the perfect blend of personality and playfulness. My friends Alli and Chandler, who live just down the street, asked for my help to create a living room that feels like a 70s basement with a Florida twist. This project was an exciting challenge that I couldn’t wait to start! Here is the space before we started:
We used accents of bubble gum pink, deep blue, and avocado green throughout the space, reflecting the bold palette of the 70s while fitting the sunny vibe of a Florida home. We are so excited with how this modern 70’s living room turned out and feel that it fits our friends’ funky and cool personalities just right!
I’d like to thank Joybird for sponsoring this post.

Alli and Chandler love thrifting everything from clothes to vintage home pieces. Their two Dalmatians add as much character to their home as the eclectic items they find. Alli loves vibrant colors and patterns and wants her home to feel cozy and unique. When she requested I try to make her living room feel like a modern 70’s basement, I said, “say no more!” Of course, since we live in Florida our friends’ bungalow also needed a touch of Florida-inspired decor.
Tropical Wallpaper Ceiling
We began the transformation by wallpapering the ceiling with a tropical blue pattern, bringing a sense of Florida’s lush outdoors into their living room and setting a lively backdrop for the rest of the makeover.
If you have never wallpapered a ceiling before… consider yourself lucky! However, the beautiful wallpaper we picked out from Joybird was easy to install! We used peel and sick as it adheres best to glossy surfaces, which their ceiling had.
Wallpaper became really popular during the 70’s so it was a must for this modern living room makeover.
Avocado Green Velvet Sofa
A 70s-inspired space needs a statement piece, and for this room, it was the green velvet sofa. Can you even?! It became the perfect centerpiece, complementing the vivid ceiling and grounding the space with its rich tone.
This sofa is insanely comfortable and is as cozy as it looks! I can already picture the many nights of laughter and memories with our friends in their new cozy space! I really feel like a couch is one of the most important pieces in your home. After all, it is where a lot of time is spent!
Vintage Modern Lighting
We added an oversized, arched floor lamp to enhance the vintage vibe. Its curved structure mimics the relaxed style of the 70s, providing warm, ambient lighting that makes the room glow during the evenings. If you ever want to create a homey vibe that is comfortable and inviting, layered lighting is the way.
Pink Wall Feature with Shelf
Next, we added a wood paneling accent wall to bring warmth and textural contrast to the cooler tones of the ceiling. The warm pink color here is called Resort Sunrise and I couldn’t be more obsessed with it. We have a similar wall in our own home and have loved how much dimension it brings.
We built an 8-foot shelf on the feature wall so Alli and Chandler could display their favorite plants, thrifted items, and personal knick-knacks. Que the Dalmatian ceramics, so cute! This pink feature wall was not hard to create and a perfect project for anyone to try.
Plaid Window Treatments
We replaced their old window treatments with something lighter, enhancing the natural light. For a 70s touch, we chose plaid window shades—retro and entirely fun. Can you believe I made those shades from their old crappy blinds? I ended up making two of them, one for this room and one for their dining area. These two room are connected, so I wanted it to feel cohesive. Such a fun and easy project!
I added two panels per side for the curtains, which made four panels per window. This made the whimsical curtains feel lush and full creating a luxurious feel even in the tinest of rooms.
Modern 70’s inspired Living Room
Seeing Alli and Chandler’s reaction to their new living room was the highlight of this project. Their space now truly reflects their personalities and their love for a past era, yet it still feels right at home in Florida.
Creating a living room that feels like a 70s basement in the Sunshine State might sound challenging, but it’s exactly these kinds of projects that fuel my passion for design. It’s about making a space feel like home, and I think we achieved that here.
