Textiles are the perfect way to create interest and add detail to any space! There are lots of different ways to combine textiles and today I’m gonna share with you how I did that in my small bedroom.

What are Textiles?
Before we jump right into it, I think we should cover the basics. When talking about interior design, the term “textile” refers to any product that is woven or made of fabric. It is as simple as it sounds, but incorporating pieces can become overwhelming when you realize how many there really are!
You’ll find textiles and design elements, such as:
- Throw pillows
- Blankets
- Area rugs
- Window treatments
- Upholstery
- Wall art
Why Textiles Matter?
In my opinion, textiles really finish off a space. They set the mood… changing a single textile in a room can totally give the space a whole new feel. That’s why they are so important! They also work together to unify the room and help bring the space together.
It’s important to focus on color palettes when deciding on textiles. Many times when we think about design, we think of color. Rather than color, pick a palette and stay in that palette while using different textiles. This is how you create the most cohesive space. Make sure you use a variety of different textiles. This keeps the space from feeling too boring and repetitive even when you use the same color.
How to Use Textiles
Now that we have a better understanding of what and why they are important. It’s time to learn how to execute them in your space.
Mixing Patterns and Colors
I see people make the big mistake of using textiles as an afterthought or an accessory. When in reality you should be using them as the inspiration! Build the room from the ground up using a textile as inspiration. Pick a rug, accent chair, or throw pillow to help give you a sense of direction!
Don’t be afraid to mix patterns and colors. As long as you stay within the decided palette I say go for it!
Rug Textiles
One of my favorite ways to add more visual interest to a space is by adding area rugs! Layering them together for contrast is one of the best ways to incorporate them into your design.
Rug Layering
The bottom rug I chose has a lot of texture and is light and airy. Where the top rug is rich in texture and color! This adds the contrast!
Bedding Textiles
You’ll see as an example, that my bedding is a monochrome design. But, there is still a lot of interest in switching up textiles. All of the bedding is a warm tan color but focus on the different textiles like the velvet quilt, knitted throw, and boucle pillows. This is what gives a monochrome design depth.
Window Treatments
The last place I would focus on textiles are window treatments. Curtains are a great way to incorporate fun fabrics into the room. I recommend doing that either with a pattern, or a good quality fabric like linen or velvet.
Curtain Fabrics
I love how these curtains have a horizontal stripe that creates added interest as you move across the room. But again, the color palette is similar to the bedding.
Window Shades
A great way to add more interest is to add natural items like bamboo shades! These are my favorite bamboo shades and they are so easy to put up and inexpensive.
