Five Simple Ways to Make a Room Feel Eclectic

If I had to choose a word for my style, it would be eclectic. Think of a boutique hotel, they are personalized and have a fun feel to them. They don’t stick to a set of rules, like a chain luxury hotel would. I love creating a space that has an eclectic feel to it, there is interest and invites others in. It is all about embracing a mix of patterns, colors, and textures. After the many projects and makeovers I have done, I have narrowed down my tried and true tips that I stand by.

1. Mixing and Matching Patterns

Mixing and matching patterns is key, so don’t be afraid to do this! I used to worry way too much about it, but you will be surprised how well patterns come together by giving them a chance. It is possible to make all the various elements in a space look like they were meant for each other.

  • Start with the biggest pattern in your room, like the rug, this will serve as the base for your design.
  • Mix patterns of different scales and proportions. Pair large-scale patterns with smaller ones for balance and contrast.
  • Mix Pattern Types: Florals, stripes, geometrics, plaids, and animal prints. Don’t be afraid to combine contrasting patterns!
  • Use solid colors, if needed, to balance and break up the patterns
  • Don’t limit patterns to just fabrics: Consider using patterned wallpaper, rugs, curtains, and artwork.
  • Create a mood board or sample swatches to see how the patterns go together.

2. Playing with Colors

Working with different colors can be hard and often easy to overthink. In order to avoid this, I like to start with some inspiration.

  • Pull colors from your favorite art piece
  • Start with the bold colors then figure out your neutrals
  • Use a moodboard
  • Look at other electric rooms

Some ways I have incorporated colors is by doing an accent wall to make a statement without overwhelming the space. I’ve also used removable wallpaper for a burst of color and pattern.

3. Exploring Textures

Texture is a big part of what makes a space warm and cozy. I gravitate towards our living room when I want to relax because I have added so many textures to it. Mix and match different textures to add depth and dimension to your rooms.

  • Layer Different Fabrics: Mix and match different fabrics like velvet, linen, cotton, wool, and faux fur to add depth and tactile appeal.
  • Incorporate Natural Textures: Wood, rattan, jute, metal, bamboo, and stone
  • Consider Wall Treatments: Use textured wallpapers, stucco, brick, or reclaimed wood panels
  • Add Soft Furnishings: Use plush rugs, fluffy throws, and textured cushions to soften hard surfaces and create a comfortable environment
  • Mix Smooth and Rough Surfaces: Contrast smooth surfaces like glass or polished metal with rough textures like distressed wood or textured ceramics
  • Play with Patterns: Incorporate patterns with varying textures, such as a textured stripe or a raised geometric design
  • Use Layered Lighting: Install a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting

4. Adding Personality with Accessories

Accessories are the finishing touches that make a space yours. They reflect who you are and what you love. I add accessories to different rooms in my home because it makes it feel like MY sanctuary.

  • Showcase Personal Collections: Display items that reflect your interests and hobbies, such as books, vinyl records, vintage cameras, or travel souvenirs
  • Mix Old and New: Combine antique or vintage pieces with modern accessories
  • Use Artwork and Photographs: Hang artwork, photographs, or prints that resonate with you and showcase your personality.
  • Include Unique Decor: Decorative bowls, sculptural objects, or figurines
  • Customize with DIY Projects: Customized wall art, handmade pottery, or refurbished furniture.
  • Incorporate Plants and Greenery: Bring nature indoors with houseplants, succulents, or fresh flowers.
  • Display Sentimental Items: Family heirlooms, inherited furniture, or handmade gifts
  • Rotate Seasonal Decor: Change up your decor seasonally with themed accessories like holiday decorations, seasonal florals, or cozy blankets.
